Read Across Maryland

Read Across Maryland evolved from Read Across America, a national reading initiative developed by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1997. It is an annual reading motivation and awareness program spearheaded by the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) that calls on everyone to read at least 30 minutes for 30 days (link for read 30 30 here) beginning on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss and ending March 31st.

Read Across Maryland 2013

In March, we asked students throughout Maryland to read 30 minutes for 30 days. All participants were entered into a drawing for a Kindle Fire or a $25 Amazon gift card. We have selected eight winners.

And the Read Across Maryland winners are...

Kindle Fire Winners:

Neecole Gregory
Mardela Middle/High School, Wicomico County

Elaina Mazin
Ashburton Elementary, Montgomery County

Joslynn Metz
Edgemere Elementary, Baltimore County

Michael Isaiah Smallwood
Benjamin Tasker MS, Prince George’s County

Amazon Gift Card Winners:

Jennifer Casagrande
Parkville MS, Baltimore County

Elektra Malave
West Meade Elementary, Anne Arundel County

Laela Brown
Overlook Elementary, Prince George's County

Andrew Gray
Margaret Brent Middle School, St. Mary’s County

We had an overwhelming response this year with 2,650 entries from across the state which meant a lot of students did a lot of reading. Congratulations to our winners and to all of you who participated. Thanks to our parents, teachers, reading specialists, and librarians who supported and encouraged the students to read and enter. Look out for information on our Summer Radical Readers program where we will be giving out four more Kindle Fires to 5th-9th graders in public schools who submit reading logs for books read July 1-30. Check back here for more details!
