Radical, Extreme, Drastic!

Radical Readers is a program created by the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA)  exclusively for middle school students to encourage them to be radical enough to forget about peer pressure and other distractions and get hooked on the joy of reading.

Since 2007, MSEA has given away laptops, $500 gift cards, video game systems, e-Readers and lots and lots of pizza–all to inspire middle school students to embrace the power of reading.

This year, any middle school student in a Maryland public school can compete individually to win a Kindle Fire or Amazon gift card, by downloading a Reading Log and sending it in with a list of books read March 1-31, 2016.

Submit your reading log.

Submissions can also must be postmarked by April 2nd and sent to:

MSEA has also chosen Andrew Jackson Academy and Walker Mill Middle School in Prince George’s County as pilot locations to see what happens when an entire school competes to read 30 minutes for 30 days. How many will keep the pace? How many will stay the course? How many will start to see reading in a different way? What kind of readers will we see at Andrew Jackson Academy and Walker Mill Middle School at the end of thirty days?

The Kick-off event at the Spauldings Branch Library features  Prince George’s County author, hip-hop musician and actor Tray Chaney, best known as “Poot” from HBO’s The Wire. Tray is joined by 93.9 WKYS radio personality Angie Ange who together will challenge students to read, read, read!

Librarians from the Spauldings Branch Library will visit both schools to provide exciting weekly booktalks from a wide selection of great books to inspire kids to read 30 minutes for 30 days. A sixth, seventh and eighth grade student who consistently reads 30 minutes for 30 days will have the opportunity to be chosen to receive a Kindle Fire or a gift card.

Radical Readers is for every Maryland middle school student.  Though we have chosen 2  pilot schools, we are giving away 2 Kindle Fires to 2 students from any public middle school in the state of Maryland . All entries must be received by April 4 at 4:45 p.m to be eligible for a random drawing to be held April 11.  Reading must begin March 1.  Get radical and get reading. You may be the one to win a Kindle Fire.
