Read Across Maryland

Read Across Maryland evolved from Read Across America, a national reading initiative developed by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1997. It is an annual reading motivation and awareness program spearheaded by the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) that calls on everyone to read at least 30 minutes for 30 days (link for read 30 30 here) beginning on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss and ending March 31st.

Photos from 2011 events

Flickr is a photo sharing tool offered by Yahoo! email. It's a great way to share your photos with lots of other people who have the same interests as you. Since basic accounts are free, it is easy to participate!

In honor of Read Across Maryland, MSEA has started a Flickr group page in an effort to share photos of our events across the state with others, and to learn more about how Marylanders read!

How do I create my own Flickr™ account?

If you already have a Yahoo! email account, you are almost ready to go. Go directly to www.flickr.com and click on "Create Your Account" and follow the instructions.

If you do not have a Yahoo! email account, you need to create one first before you can create a Flickr™ account. Then visit www.flickr.com and click on "Create Your Account" and follow the directions.

How do I upload my photos to Flickr™?

Once you have created a Flickr™ account, you can upload photos immediately. Click on "Upload your first photo" and follow the instructions. (Be sure to tag your photos "read2011" to participate.) Your photo should appear in the submissions slide show within a few minutes.

What are tags?

Tags are like keywords or labels that you add to a photo to make it easier to find later. You can tag a photo with phrases like "catherine yosemite hiking mountain trail." Later if you look for pictures of Catherine, you can just click that tag and get all photos that have been tagged that way.

In this case, you want to tag your photos with read2011.

More help with tags.

Read 30/30 video

The beautiful new Calvert County Library in Prince Frederick was the backdrop for MSEA's Read 30 Minutes for 30 Days video. The video features students and families making the most out of a wintery Saturday morning visit to their public library. Check out the behind--the-scenes photos!
